JOJO ABOT at LUMINEX
There are still plenty of PST: Art’s science collisions happening all over town, in an ethos within and around the initiative spectacularly amplified by a musical activation at a James Turrell Skyspace, an interdimensional drumming performance at Alex Theater, the return of tech-forward public art festival Luminex to the streets of DTLA, and a bit of light spiritualism at the MAK Center. Plus phantasmagorical flora and fauna at KP Projects, the world on fire at Bermudez Projects, every artist at The Brewery, photographers for Kamala Harris at Peter Fetterman Gallery, and 30 Years of Giant Robot. And the books! We have an independent press deep dive at Stairwell LA, and launch events at 2220 Arts+ Archives, LAMAG/LACE, and Skylight. You want more books? Drop in on Rare Books LA at Union Station all weekend. You want more art? Come hang with Shana and artists Demetri Broxton and Sharon Barnes, they’ll be speaking about the gorgeous current exhibition at Patricia Sweetow Gallery, on the afternoon of Saturday, October 5th in DTLA.

LUMINEX 3.0: Landscape Frequencies is Saturday, October 5, 7-11:30pm in DTLA. For one night only, see DTLA in a whole new light, as a cohort of nine of today’s most fascinating technology-embracing artists light up a five-block patch of the South Park neighborhood with monumental scale audio/video installations. Curator Carmen Zella (NXT Art Foundation, NOW Art) describes Luminex as, “a radical act of urban transformation, cultural access, community building and artistic expression,” and I think that’s right. Combining the unique features of Downtown’s historic architecture with cinematic impact and awe-inspiring creative tech, in the form of a self-guided walking (or pedicab) tour, and, if you choose, a bit of an artsy pub crawl, Luminex is more than a can’t-miss art experience, it’s a model for public art engagement and neighborhood cultural activation that the world should emulate. The night officially kicks off at Refik Anadol’s always-epic piece at 11th & Margo at 7pm, followed by a sidewalk procession led by JOJO ABOT. Further artists on the map are Alice Bucknell, Nao Bustamante, Petra Cortright, Marc Horowitz, Carole Kim, and Sarah Rara. Perqs and packages include pedicabs, art for purchase, local gastropub specials, and VIP packages that include staying at the very chic Downtown LA Proper Hotel… but the art that is the heart of the Luminex experience is, like all great public art, completely free.
