Camille Rose Garcia: The Orphaned Nihilist Hospital for Dolls opens Saturday, May 30, 6-9pm at KP Projects. Occupying the fertile, hallucinatory borderlands between narrative world-building and cultural critique, Garcia’s latest project anchors her shadow-work cosmology within a deeply personal lexicon of survival and refuge. The exhibition expands a new serial graphic novella—set in a dystopian landscape where imagination is outlawed—into a tangible visual environment, embodied in delicate watercolors and larger wood-panel paintings rendered in her distinctive palette of acid pastels and smoky jewel tones. As Garcia populates a signature landscape of gothic, ornate decay with smoking toys, haunted dollhouses and their enchanted denizens, and the occasional wandering poet donkey, she processes a period of profound disillusionment with global events by conjuring the power to resist the violence of collapsing empires.
