Hey Los Angeles, your pagan side is showing this week, as multiple exhibitions and activations such as at Night Gallery, The Box, and the Rose Garden take the first day of Spring and organic splendor as inspiration. Plus exciting things are happening on walls, pages, stages, and screens at ArtCenter, the Hammer, ReflectSpace, the Loft at Liz’s, Vielmetter Los Angeles, Timothy Hawkinson Gallery, EPOCH Gallery at Rip Space, Angel City Press at Central Library, and Alta Beta at Ruth Gallery. Oh, and there’s also Shana speaking with Valerie Wilcox in her solo show at Mount Saint Mary’s on Sunday the 23rd. Now let’s get out there and smell those flowers.

Devin Troy Strother: Dancing in the Dark opens Saturday, March 22, 6-8pm, at ArtCenter. Celebrating 15 years of Strother’s career as one of Los Angeles’ most recognized and recognizable artists, and lowkey taking credit for yet another brilliant alum, ArtCenter’s career survey of the artist’s work in basically every medium occupies both its main and satellite campus gallery spaces. Strother’s work is often recognized for its twisted humor, bonkers color schemes, and underlying critiques of race, identity, pop culture, and art history. His practice has always blown right past traditional boundaries in terms of mediums and includes painting, sculpture, installation, video, performance, publishing, and more. His more recent interests have evolved to specifically focus on language as a living, powerful thing. “Through a process of social osmosis, phrases, descriptions, and everyday language,” Strother tracks how communication continuously morphs, in his trademark excitation of striking objects, images, and scenes. On view through June 21 & July 26 in Pasadena at both South and Hillside campus galleries, respectively; artcenter.edu. —SND
