Hot enough for you, Los Angeles? Well grab that sunscreen, because Gallery Weekend 2024 wants you to get outside and explore the far-flung contours of the art scene topography. This week we’ve got reviews of current shows at both Marian Goodman and Charlie James, and week-ahead picks from 1301PE, Morán Morán, the Skirball, OCHI, Thinkspace, Simard Bilodeau, the DNA Festival, PRS, Fotografiska/Vimeo, Regen Projects/American Cinematheque, and more. Oh! And in news about ourselves, this past week, your new favorite art calendar earned a flash Bestseller badge from Substack, our own lady critic (that’s me but it’s weird to write about yourself!) took top honors at the LA Press Club awards (I’m over the moon about it), and also I’ll be leading a conversation at Laguna Art Museum on Saturday afternoon June 29, with artists and friends Chuck Arnoldi and Woods Davy, excellently titled “Sticks & Stones,” if you’re out that way.

Gallery Weekend Los Angeles 2024 is June 28-29 everywhere. I mean, if you do it right, every weekend is Gallery Weekend, right? True, but initiatives focus the mind and give actionable momentum to your itinerary. In previous years, Gallery Platform.LA has organized this event by neighborhood—West Side one night, downtown another, and so on. This year they’re trying something a little different and, as befits the local vibe, more freeform. Friday & Saturday nights and especially all day Saturday, galleries across the city are participating at every level from staying open late to throwing opening receptions, hosting talks, tours, book launches, and workshops, and even organizing dance music sessions and low-key costume parties. Some highlights of Friday, June 28: LA Louver, Albertz Benda (artist talk), 1301PE (opening), Marc Selwyn Fine Art’s new second space, David Zwirner (open late), Moran Moran (opening night), Jeffrey Deitch (first opening), Matthew Brown (opening). Some highlights of Saturday, June 29: BLUM (dancing!), Cirrus Gallery (studio workshop), Vielmetter, Luis De Jesus Los Angeles, Make Room, Wilding Cran (opening), VSF, Marian Goodman (closing), Philip Martin (opening), Hawkinson (costumes), Steve Turner, Anat Ebgi, M+B, Jeffrey Deitch (second opening). There’s an opening night party June 27 also, but I’m afraid you’re on your own for finding an invite. For a complete list of activities & schedules, visit: galleryplatform.la.
