13ThingsLA: July 8
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot for your art calendar

Wow, last week was a long year. To recap: everything is bonkers and there’s too much of it! And this week in Los Angeles art and culture won’t make it easy to slow down. Enjoy a variety of #BigSummerGroupShow action, quieter offerings, and gathering points across all manner of mediums and styles but with one thing in common—a look at from whence, and how far, we’ve come. Find anniversarial and commemorative inspiration at BGFA at Art/Space114, the Armory, Moskowitz Bayse, Corita Art Center, Dominique Porter Gallery, William Turner Gallery, Vielmetter Los Angeles, Jeffrey Deitch, Regen Projects, Anat Ebgi Gallery, Matter Studio Gallery, Charlie James Gallery, and Central Library.

BGFA.DTLA.00.26 previews Thursday, July 9, 5-10pm during Art Night at Art/Space 114. Anyone who remembers the heady early days of the downtown art walk and the naughty aughts in the Historic Core definitely drank red wine in a red solo cup at Bert Green’s cultural spearhead of a contemporary gallery on 5th & Main—and I am one of them. Now a mere block away, another neighborhood kunsthalle celebrates that curious, unruly era, as Green returns to the scene to curate a commemorative look both back and ahead, gathering some 15 artists who were here then and are, crucially, very much still part of the story. As my exhibition text for the show notes, “this survey and snapshot investigates how these artists have been shaped by their relationship to DTLA, and those who have made incalculable contributions to this iconic, intense neighborhood’s history and future.” A dedicated opening reception follows on Saturday, July 11, 4-7pm; Artist Talk Sunday, July 12, 2pm. Art Talk August 8, 2pm avec moi. On view in DTLA through August 22; bgfa.us/dtla. —SND
