Concrete Shadows at 34.0522°N: Cityscape 2026 at Billis Williams Gallery. Returning for its beloved annual summer survey of contemporary painting, Cityscape 2026 maps Los Angeles through an intuitive, eclectic—and if not exactly romantic, let’s say, compassionate—inventory of our gorgeous chaos. Municipal paradoxes abound where celluloid cheers on the coastal expanse, encroached-upon desert peripheries press against needlessly manicured lawns, and cloverleaf interchanges soar above quiet enclaves. From sunrise to sunset and in our never-quite-dark nights, twenty-six distinct painterly practices pay close attention to the city’s constant reconfiguration. At the heart of LA’s sprawling, seismic romp of various urbanities, we are united by the poetry of all those empty spaces waiting to be filled with us.
