13ThingsLA: August 27
Far Out for your art calendar
Wait, is summer over already? Damn that was fast. And apparently no one told the weather! Anyway for this, the final edition of your favorite curated Los Angeles art calendar before a new season arrives with a bang (seriously you guys, the next few weekends are going to be bonkers), please enjoy exhibitions, performances, immersions, road trips, at least two different unicorns, and the most wholesome short film ever—at The REEF, LACDA, Shoshana Wayne Gallery, Tyler Park Presents, Automata, Oxy Arts, Lakewood Center, Artbook at HWLA, Corey Helford Gallery, solo., The Cabin, Getty Center, and your laptop.
And on a rather delightful personal note, we were thrilled to be featured in a fantastic story for The Art Newspaper about how new online art writing platforms are centering Los Angeles. Thank you for making it all possible!
Feature
The REEF Open House, Saturday, August 30, 5-8pm. Downtown’s perennially evolving behemoth of a creative hub throws open its doors for an evening of exhibitions, open studios, and cultural cross-pollination. If like me, you’ve not been by there in a minute, now is a good time because apparently the place is absolutely full of art spaces now! Anchoring the event are spots like Webber Gallery (showing the Awol Erizku-curated group of recent Yale Photography MFA program), Hannah Sloan Curatorial (with new paintings by Jacqueline Valenzuela), Deadbeat Club (a gallery space and photography-forward publishing house showcasing work from two new books), a special Yiwei Gallery popup with Charles Christopher Hill and Julie Yeo, and the inaugural group show at Photographic Arts Council LA’s new HQ. Meanwhile, dozens of independent artists activate their studios with work spanning painting, photography, sculpture, design, and experimental media, forming an ecosystem that mirrors the area’s polyphonic energy.
