Hibiscus TV in Origins of Matter opens Sunday, August 16, 4-8pm at Matter Studio Gallery. Channeling the eternal archetype of the enlightened trickster, Amy Kaps and Kaye Freeman—working collaboratively as Hibiscus TV—combine their various interests in painting, sculpture, performance art, video, and phantasmagorical metamorphosis into zany Gesamtkunstwerks that buoyantly critique modern excess. As they transform industrial detritus and domestic cast-offs into extravagant, feral regalia, exhibiting and adorning themselves in hand-crafted garments, the duo stages theatrical interventions against monumental, neon-saturated canvases and video projection, and exhibitions of realized works and performance-play elements. Currently completing a cycle based on the natural elements, they’ve arrived at metal—so this iteration should be the shiniest, sharpest, clangiest, and fanciest of them all.
